Pool rules that do not actually exist
You must double the black
When out doing a pool table recovering job, I often hear this shouted out. It is one of those you hear around pool table halls when the player at the table is just about to pot an easy black. The opponent is obviously a bad loser!
A pocket must be nominated for the black
Whilst out installing a beautiful solid oak refectory pool dining table the Father and son were very eager to play a game once I had levelled up the pool table. The son won the first game easily so the Father decided to throw in this new twist to the rules. I had to correct him which he wasn’t too happy about!
Only one shot on the black
That old chestnut! This normally applies in pubs were the locals have made up their own version of the game and who’s to argue when having this explained to you by a couple of big burly builders enjoying a game on a pool table after laying bricks all day?
Any foul whilst on the black loses
What a load of tosh!
You cannot play the cue ball backwards from the baulk
This rumour started to spread up and down the pool table establishments of this land a couple of years after the D was taken away. To be honest with you I actually thought this was an amended rule. I wrongly put a customer wrong once after installing his pool diners by telling him this was part of the BAPTO rules. Still, nobody’s perfect!
